Growing my career at Intuit while maintaining my private practice

Back when I was just starting my career, I figured out I’d thrive in the accounting field, but I knew I didn’t want to work for a typical accounting firm. So I chose to pursue the enrolled agent credential instead. That’s when Intuit recruited me. Through my experience with the company, I discovered how I wanted to shape my career.

How I created the future I wanted

During college, I thought I’d find a career path in bar and restaurant management, but I realized I wasn’t earning my worth. I began looking for some part-time supplemental work, and I was hired by a small tax preparation firm as an accountant.

I joined Intuit as a seasonal tax expert to support TurboTax Live. This past January I was offered the opportunity to become a full-time team leader for a QuickBooks Live team. I love the work, and the connections I’ve made with team members and other team leaders has been invaluable to my career growth.

I was offered the opportunity to extend my seasonal contract with Intuit after the tax season, but I turned it down so I could focus on my own practice. Most of my clients at that point were bars and restaurants, and they were all suffering from the pandemic.

I knew I wanted to remain a part of the Intuit Expert Network. Later that year I came back to a part-time position with TurboTax Live. I also started doing some work in the QuickBooks space (TurboTax is geared toward consumers, while QuickBooks focuses on business customers). The people, the environment—everything about Intuit makes me want to continue to contribute to its mission of powering prosperity around the world.

I then applied for team lead roles for both TurboTax and QuickBooks, and I got an offer in the QuickBooks environment. I took it, and I haven’t looked back since!

Want to know something great about Intuit? They not only allow me to have my own tax practice, but they encourage it. Of course, when I’m here, Intuit is my priority, but I’m given a lot of flexibility and autonomy to decide what my schedule looks like. If I need to take a few hours to work on my own practice, there’s never any pushback or question about it.

Becoming an ever (better) leader of people while growing my practice

As an Intuit team leader, I get a significant discount on our professional version of software—which saves me thousands of dollars a year. I have more resources now than I ever had before in my practice.

I’m part of something bigger than myself here. I want to be the best leader I can for my 25-30 tax experts who live all over the country and come from diverse backgrounds. Our Management Accelerator Program helps me do that, providing feedback on my strengths while also giving me constructive advice on the areas I need to work on.

I’m passionate about making my team meetings count. I always focus on highlighting three important objectives for the week. I also look for ways to connect our team’s work to the company’s goals, values and our mission to power prosperity around the world.

Given that we’re all working remotely, these meetings are how I keep everyone engaged and doing the kind of exceptional work that helps our customers overcome their most important financial challenges

Before, during and after tax season, I want to stay on top of my game. With the Intuit Learning Center, I can continually get an update on new developments in my current role as well as learn about skills I’ll need to move up and into new opportunities.

Little things make a big difference. Feeling appreciated in our work—we all want (and deserve) it. The company’s Spotlight program does just that. Whether it’s recognition from a peer or a team leader, or a financial bonus, the program is something I brag about to every tax, bookkeeping and financial expert I meet. It empowers us to regularly recognize our peers or teams.
