{"id":16251,"date":"2026-07-02T10:32:43","date_gmt":"2026-07-02T17:32:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/intuitblog.com\/?p=16251"},"modified":"2026-07-02T10:32:44","modified_gmt":"2026-07-02T17:32:44","slug":"how-leading-with-velocity-makes-a-difference","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.intuit.com\/blog\/innovative-thinking\/thought-leadership\/how-leading-with-velocity-makes-a-difference\/","title":{"rendered":"How Leading with Velocity Makes all the Difference"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Being a leader doesn\u2019t come with a set of instructions and with all the social, economic and political uncertainties in the world today, leaders must quickly adapt and evolve to meet the unprecedented change of pace that businesses are facing. Rarely does a leader think, \u201cI wish I had moved slower,\u201d in fact, the pace at which we move is usually a differentiator. Another differentiator is velocity \u2013 the combination of applying speed to the direction you\u2019ve chosen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I had the opportunity to discuss what I thought were three of the keys to being a successful leader in today\u2019s environment in a recent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/pulse\/leading-environment-requires-courage-velocity-adam-bryant\/?trackingId=HTjUdY3UTOOgB%2FoMm0KlUw%3D%3D\" target=\"_blank\">interview<\/a> with Adam Bryant. I explained the importance of having the courage to be bold in the decisions you make. I also discussed the important role of compassion and how leaders need to make the extra effort to understand what their teams are going through.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The last area I discussed was the importance of velocity, because velocity and speed can often be thought of as one and the same. However, there\u2019s a vital difference. Velocity is the fusing of speed with a clear direction to create impact \u2014 and I believe that achieving velocity is increasingly the key differentiator between success and failure in today\u2019s world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>There\u2019s No Substitute for Speed<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Moving fast matters, and it matters a lot. The rate of change right now is turbo-charged with no signs of slowing down. If you want to make a difference for your employees and customers, you have to move with incredible speed. You can have the best plan in the world, but if you don\u2019t execute it with speed, the world will leave you behind. No matter what you\u2019re trying to accomplish, you\u2019re almost never going to look back and say I wish I had moved slower.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Speed Needs Direction to Succeed<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yet moving with speed just for speed\u2019s sake can often be destructive. Speed needs to be pointed in the right direction to be successful. Some of the hardest lessons I\u2019ve learned in my career were when I acted with great speed, but wasn\u2019t more thoughtful about the direction I wanted to head. By trying to make a quick impact, I ended up actually doing a lot of damage and putting myself and the team back. The lesson I learned was that it\u2019s vital to spend the time to be thoughtful about the direction you are heading in and what you want to accomplish.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Life is Mostly Two-Way Doors<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So, how is it possible to be both fast and thoughtful at the same time? The way to align what may seem like two opposing ideas is by realizing that most decisions are two-way doors and that we learn by doing. Most decisions aren\u2019t going to make or break your team, and you&#8217;ll learn a lot by making those decisions and moving forward with them. Thoughtfulness doesn\u2019t come before action; rather, they happen in tandem and inform each other. The trick is to always be moving and always be learning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I\u2019ve seen firsthand how creating velocity is a powerful fuel for our teams at Intuit.
