They’re modeled on real entry-level work and built with accounting firm owners, and you unlock them by earning your Accounting Futures Educator Badge.

What does work-based learning mean for a college accounting course?

Work-based learning is hands-on practice with real job tasks, tied to what students learn in class. The definition of “work-based learning” in 20 U.S.C. § 2302(55) of the Carl D. Perkins Career and Technical Education Act of 2006 (“Perkins V”) includes “simulated environments” in its definition, so the work doesn’t have to happen in an office. In accounting, if a firm would use what the student produced, it counts.

What are QuickBooks Micro-Internships?

QuickBooks Micro-Internships are paid projects from <a href="https://www.intuit.com/solutions/education/accounting-futures/"data-wa-link="icom-blog:work-based-learning-what-are-accounting-futures-program" data-action="interacted" data-object="content" data-ui-action="clicked" data-ui-object="link" data-ui-object-detail="work-based-learning-what-are-accounting-futures-program" target="_blank">Intuit for Education’s Accounting Futures Program. Accounting firm owners helped design them around the work their entry-level hires do, and each one takes about 15 hours.

Unlike traditional internships, which usually last a term or a summer, students complete these remotely around classes and jobs.

They’re a good fit if any of these sound like you:

You teach intermediate accounting or accounting information systems and want students to finish with named deliverables on their resumes.

You advise an accounting club, and members keep asking where to get real experience.

Your students work while they study, so a traditional internship doesn’t fit their schedule.

Where work-based learning fits across an accounting degree

Work-based learning builds in stages, from learning what accountants do to doing the work. Each stage already has a home in a typical accounting degree.

Stage

Where it shows up

What it looks like

Awareness

Introductory courses

A practitioner visits class to talk about what accountants do day to day, such as an Industry Advisor guest speaker

Exploration

Early major courses

Students practice in real software through QuickBooks Online curriculum

Preparation

Intermediate and systems courses

Students build advisory and communication skills with free advisory curriculum and earn their certification and badge

Experience

Upper-level courses and clubs

Students complete paid client-style work, like a Micro-Internship or a traditional internship

Students earn their certification and badge in the middle stages, so plan for the last stage about a year ahead.

Internship, co-op, practicum, or Micro-Internship: choosing the right format

The right format depends on how much time your students have and how much setup work you can take on. Internships and co-ops go deepest, but they take weeks or months and an employer partner.

A practicum is hands-on work built into a degree program, usually for credit. Micro-Internships are shorter, paid, virtual projects that fit around classes and jobs, so more students can take part.

Format

Time commitment

Best fit when

Traditional internship

Usually one term, often a summer

The student can commit a summer or a full term

Co-op

Typically alternating terms of work and school

Your program already has a co-op structure

Practicum

Built into the program, usually for credit

Your department already runs practicums

QuickBooks Micro-Internship

About 15 hours

Students need paid experience that fits around classes and work

A traditional internship is the better fit if your students can commit a summer or a full term and your campus already has firm relationships. If most of your students work or carry a full course load, start with a Micro-Internship. It gives them paid project work now and a stronger application for a longer internship later.

Say you teach an accounting information systems course with 30 juniors, and most of them work part time. Only a few could take a summer internship, but a paid project in QuickBooks Online fits around their shifts and their classes.

Do short, paid projects count as real work-based learning?

Yes. The Perkins V definition includes simulated environments at an educational institution, as long as students get firsthand practice with the tasks a career requires. Micro-Internships add pay and work modeled on what firms hand their entry-level hires.

Intuit surveyed 700 US accounting professionals in 2025 for the Intuit QuickBooks Accountant Technology Report, and 94% predicted that more strategic advisory work will boost firm revenue.

Students practice that kind of work. Project 1, for example, asks them to explain what the numbers mean for the client.

Some students may argue that passing CPA exam sections matters more than any short project. We agree the CPA is the bigger credential. A Micro-Internship adds proof of applied skill to a student’s resume while they work toward the exam, and it takes a fraction of the time.

The five QuickBooks Micro-Internship projects and what each one asks

Students can apply to any of five projects, each built around work firms hand to new hires. Every project includes QuickBooks Online work and a short slide pack for a client or manager, along with a Source Sheet and an AI Disclosure Form.

Project

The work

Key deliverables

1. Small businesses with accountant support were 73% more likely to report they’re in good financial health. Advisory work goes beyond bookkeeping and payroll. Clients now look to their accountants for financial planning, analysis, and help setting growth goals. Students build those skills in the advisory curriculum behind the Client Advisory Services Foundations Badge. For a firm’s view, see how firms are growing advisory services.

For example, on the payables project, a student might find two bills from the same vendor for the same amount, dated a week apart. Entering both or deleting one would be a guess, so the project asks them to log a possible duplicate, state their assumption, and write the question for the client.

The Project Match Grid: pointing each student to the right project

Match students to the project that fits what they’ve practiced most recently. In the application, students rate their comfort with each skill on a four-point scale: Not yet, Learning, Comfortable, or Could teach it. Use the same scale to point them to a starting project.

If your student…

Point them to

What the project
rewards

Is Comfortable reading an income statement and balance sheet

Project 1, Financial Health Review

Separating what the numbers show from what they’d need to know before drawing a conclusion

Is Comfortable with accounts payable and payment terms

Project 2, Accounts Payable Review

Flagging items that lack support for client follow-up

Is Comfortable with accounts receivable and enjoys client communication

Project 3, Billing and A/R Review

Writing the client question when a detail is missing

Is Comfortable recording journal entries and likes structure

Project 4, Chart of Accounts Cleanup

Explaining how an account’s type changes where its activity appears in the statements

Rates bank reconciliation Comfortable or Could teach it

Project 5, Month-End Review

Documenting a remaining difference without forcing it with an adjustment

If a student answers, “Not yet”, on a skill, that project isn’t their starting point this term. Then list the badge or certification they earned as their major. This step unlocks the projects, and students can’t view or apply to them without it.

Review the projects and apply to the ones that interest them.

If selected, complete the project by the posted deadline and submit the post-program evaluation.

Students know what they need before they apply, and access runs through an educator they already know.

Each application asks for four things:

The name of their badged professor

The accounting courses they’ve taken

Their hands-on work in accounting software and QuickBooks Online

Links to their Credly badges

Students may want help describing their QuickBooks Online work. Students have three places to go for help:

For accounting and judgment questions, they come to you.

For QuickBooks Online access, project scope, deadlines, or payment, they contact Parker Dewey at support@parkerdewey.com.

For program questions, like the badge or curriculum, they email accountingfutures@intuit.com.

The projects look for students who can work through ambiguity and ask a good question instead of guessing. If a student comes to you stuck, help them think through the approach.

Each project comes with an AI Disclosure Form, so talk with students about AI before they start. It works best as a second set of eyes, with the student checking its suggestions against the QuickBooks evidence.

Intuit’s 2026 AI Impact Report found a similar pattern in small businesses. AI use is highest in tasks with clear inputs and outputs, where a person can quickly review its first pass.

A student working on the chart of accounts project might have an AI tool suggest merging Office Supplies and Office Expenses. After pulling the account activity, the student finds equipment lease payments in one of them and explains in the AI Disclosure Form why they held off on the merge.

Bring paid work-based learning to your students with Intuit for Education

Your students don’t have to wait for a summer or a full term to get hands-on experience.
