{"id":3144,"date":"2019-08-12T15:36:50","date_gmt":"2019-08-12T22:36:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/intuitblog.com\/?p=3144"},"modified":"2022-11-09T19:52:36","modified_gmt":"2022-11-10T03:52:36","slug":"gazing-into-technologys-crystal-ball","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.intuit.com\/blog\/innovative-thinking\/gazing-into-technologys-crystal-ball\/","title":{"rendered":"Gazing Into Technology\u2019s Crystal Ball"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Intuit CEO <a href=\"https:\/\/www.intuit.com\/company\/executives\/sasan-goodarzi\/\" target=\"_blank\">Sasan Goodarzi<\/a> joins the who\u2019s who of leaders exploring AI, regulation, the future workforce and other tech trends<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Intuit CEO Sasan Goodarzi was among several dozen Fortune 500 leaders, tech entrepreneurs and investors who recently attended <a href=\"https:\/\/fortuneconferences.com\/fortune-brainstorm-tech-2019\/\" target=\"_blank\">Fortune Brainstorm Tech<\/a>, an invitation-only conference for exploring bleeding-edge trends. At this year\u2019s event in Aspen, Colorado, July 15 \u2013 17, topics ranged from artificial intelligence (AI), to the intersection of policy and tech, to U.S. competitiveness versus China and the rest of the world, and more. Below are some highlights.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"youtube-player embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player youtube-player\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube-nocookie.com\/embed\/l_RiAmdX370?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-US&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/p>\n<h2>The AI factor<\/h2>\n<p>AI was a major theme this year. Discussions abounded on the ethics and moral obligations facing the industry to ensure that AI technology develops for good. In a panel titled <strong>\u201c<\/strong>How to Control AI (Before It Controls Us),\u201d Salesforce\u2019s chief scientist and IBM\u2019s SVP of cloud\/cognitive software addressed the issue of what companies must do to harness the potential of AI without harming their customers.<\/p>\n<p>The speakers noted that AI will have both good and bad impacts. On the plus side, it will enable things like faster drug development, self-flying cars and better policing. But it will also allow people to create and distribute fake news, make \u201cdeep fake\u201d videos to convince people of political and other biases, and even frame minorities for doing bad acts they never actually did.<\/p>\n<p>AI is only as good as the trained data we give it, and therefore needs to be tested for bias and fairness. For example, if a company does business lending based on all the historical credit, it will inevitably end up lending more money to men than women. So it\u2019s critical to test for bias of historical data to train models the right way. Bottom line: AI depends heavily on clean data and proper training of the model, and companies need to invest to teach it the right things.<\/p>\n<h2>The future worker<\/h2>\n<p>Employers and managers take note (again): Gen Z and millennials have different mindsets, needs and skills that you\u2019ll need to factor into decision about workplace location, tech tools and employee wellness. Leaders from SAP, Bloomberg Beta, eBay and NEA explored the subject in a town hall session.<\/p>\n<p>Among the points explored: In order to understand who their future workers are, employers should treat them as a customer segment. They should also consider how much they spend on training and what they spend it on. The gig economy is growing fast, but there\u2019s no training to teach low-income people looking for freelance work the skills they need. The future worker will also most likely be found in urban areas; it\u2019s projected that 60 percent of new jobs will be in 25 cities in the U.S.<\/p>\n<h2>Leading\u00a0in a time of change<\/h2>\n<p>In a panel titled \u201cLeading in a Time of Change,\u201d Sasan and PagerDuty CEO Jennifer Tejada discussed how they\u2019re navigating major transitions in their companies\u2019 trajectories.\u00a0 Sasan shared how Intuit has reimagined and disrupted itself multiple times on the way to becoming the AI-driven expert platform it is today.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe were born in the era of DOS,\u201d he said. \u201cThe only way to do that is to fall in love with consumer problems, not our solutions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On Diversity and Inclusion, Sasan shared his journey as a native of Tehran, Iran who got bullied as a kid in the U.S. \u201cInclusion hits close to home,\u201d he said. \u201cI know what it feels like not to be wanted.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sasan said that diversity is a fact, and inclusion is a choice. If you want inclusion, it\u2019s important to listen to front-line employees, learn and make real adjustments in behavior. As for diversity, it starts at the top with a diverse senior leadership team (60 percent of Sasan\u2019s team are women), and ensuring you have goals and that they are measured.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDiversity is a strategic imperative as our customers are diverse,\u201d Sasan said.\u00a0\u201cIt\u2019s critical that we are building products that appeal to diverse customers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On regulation, Sasan advocated for the private and public sector to unite to accelerate innovation and\u00a0implement guardrails instead of attacking each other. He used industry tax\u00a0fraud as an example of how a great public-private partnership can lead to\u00a0great outcomes. Intuit and other industry players worked with the IRS to help reduce fraud by 90 percent.<\/p>\n<p>On the issue of the future workforce, Sasan said a key to retaining millennials is all about the work they do. \u201cIf it matters, they stay,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Manager capability, too, is key. Managers need to learn soft skills and how to lead vs. control, set direction and priorities, and remove obstacles so employees can do great work.<\/p>\n<p>Sasan called AI the \u201cthird platform,\u201d after electricity and the Internet, that will \u201cfundamentally change the world.\u201d He defined AI as Machine Learning, knowledge engineering and natural language processing, and explained how Intuit uses AI to help put more money in customers\u2019 pockets, eliminate\u00a0drudgery and build confidence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s critical to helping our customers get paid the next day,\u201d Sasan said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Intuit CEO Sasan Goodarzi joins the who\u2019s who of leaders exploring AI, regulation, the future workforce and other tech trends Intuit CEO Sasan Goodarzi was among several dozen Fortune 500 leaders, tech entrepreneurs and investors who recently attended Fortune Brainstorm Tech, an invitation-only conference for exploring bleeding-edge trends.
