{"id":4682,"date":"2020-08-14T09:23:46","date_gmt":"2020-08-14T16:23:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/intuitblog.com\/?p=4682"},"modified":"2025-10-09T06:42:36","modified_gmt":"2025-10-09T13:42:36","slug":"women-entrepreneurs-and-pay-equity","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.intuit.com\/blog\/social-responsibility\/women-entrepreneurs-and-pay-equity\/","title":{"rendered":"Women Entrepreneurs Shaping the Future of Business Success"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Resources for women entrepreneurs&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Intuit\u2014the maker of <a href=\"https:\/\/turbotax.intuit.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">TurboTax<\/a> and\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/quickbooks.intuit.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">QuickBooks<\/a>\u2014is proud of its progress and initiatives aimed at giving a voice to underrepresented groups, including women entrepreneurs.\u202fAnd although strides have been made, there\u2019s still more to be done to support American women in business, especially women of color and the underserved.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This guide provides women entrepreneurs of all cultures and backgrounds with resources to navigate today\u2019s fast-paced business world. There\u2019s a lot out there to support your journey\u2014everything from educational resources and networking platforms to organizations that support women entrepreneurs.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Challenges facing women entrepreneurs&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Before we dive into the resources, here\u2019s a brief rundown of the great strides women entrepreneurs have made in recent decades:\u202f&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The share of women-owned businesses has skyrocketed from a mere 4.6% of all businesses in 1972 to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nwbc.gov\/annual-reports\/2023\/BytheNumbers.html#:~:text=The%20share%20of%20all%20women,owned%20businesses%2C%20progress%20is%20progress.\" target=\"_blank\">10.2% in 2023<\/a>.\u202f&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Since 2019, the number of women-owned businesses increased 13.6%, making up<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wippeducationinstitute.org\/2024-impact-of-women-owned-businesses#:~:text=The%202024%20Wells%20Fargo%20Impact,causes%20that%20underlie%20the%20patterns.\" target=\"_blank\"> 39.1% of American businesses<\/a>.\u202f&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>During the same period, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wippeducationinstitute.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">WIPP Education Institute<\/a> found that firms owned by women of color kept pace with women-owned businesses in general, with 14.8% growth\u2014an addition of 2.1 million businesses in the Black community. The Latina\/Hispanic (14.3%) and Asian American (13.4%) communities were close behind.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Despite this progress, women entrepreneurs still face unique challenges. For example, although women-owned businesses perform at least as well as those owned by men, they do not have the same access to capital.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to a study by <a href=\"https:\/\/insights.som.yale.edu\/insights\/why-its-harder-for-women-founders-to-get-venture-capital-funding\" target=\"_blank\">Yale University<\/a>, women represent just 16% of first-time venture capital (VC)-backed entrepreneurs. And success doesn\u2019t even improve their access to funding. After a successful VC venture, women are still 18% less likely to receive funding than their male counterparts.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is just another example of the struggle many women face in finding resources, financial or otherwise, to help them succeed in business.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Organizations that support women entrepreneurs&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Part of the reason some women entrepreneurs struggle to find resources is that many don\u2019t know where to look. Or they may simply not know what\u2019s out there. The organizations and government agencies that provide this support aren\u2019t always widely advertised.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So, with awareness in mind, here are some organizations you can call on for resources during your entrepreneurial journey.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Small Business Administration (SBA)&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Within the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sba.gov\/business-guide\/grow-your-business\/women-owned-businesses\" target=\"_blank\">SBA<\/a> is a department called the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sba.gov\/about-sba\/sba-locations\/headquarters-offices\/office-womens-business-ownership\" target=\"_blank\">Office of Women\u2019s Business Ownership (OWBO)<\/a>. One of the OWBO&#8217;s primary tasks is overseeing Women\u2019s Business Centers (WBCs), which help women overcome obstacles as they launch their businesses.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In addition to WBCs, the SBA also makes assistance available through the <a href=\"https:\/\/wosb.certify.sba.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\">Women-Owned Small Business (WOSB) Federal Contract Program.<\/a> This program aims to level the playing field by increasing the number of government contracts given to women-owned businesses.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another SBA program for women business owners is the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sba.gov\/contracting\/government-contracting-programs\/8a-business-development-program\" target=\"_blank\">8(a) Business Development Program<\/a>, which aims to help underrepresented businesses compete in the marketplace. You can find details for this program at your local WBC.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Women entrepreneurs also have access to a lender match tool and various SBA loans they can leverage for business funding.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">US Department of Commerce<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.commerce.gov\/work-us\/services-businesses\/resources-women-entrepreneurs\" target=\"_blank\">US Department of Commerce<\/a> promotes several organizations that assist women entrepreneurs. The US Economic Development Administration (EDA), the Minority Business Development Agency (MBDA), and the International Trade Administration are all go-to entities for women looking to advance their businesses.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>EDA<\/strong> funds are generally used to distribute new tools and technology to economic development lawmakers. These tools help you make informed development decisions and may provide insight into opportunities in your area.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The <strong>MBDA\u2019s <\/strong>Business Centers for Enterprising Women of Color focuses on helping women entrepreneurs reach their potential as drivers of the economy. Its primary aim is to help women-owned businesses land government contracts, access capital, create jobs, and grow into competitive businesses.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The <strong>International Trade Administration\u2019s<\/strong> Women\u2019s Global Trade Empowerment Program is an invaluable resource for women looking to expand their businesses into new markets.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">SCORE&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">SCORE, or the Service Corps of Retired Executives, began in 1964 and has been a longtime ally of small business owners. The nonprofit organization\u2019s goal is to connect small businesses with the resources they need in their early growth stages.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For <a href=\"https:\/\/www.score.org\/women-entrepreneurs\" target=\"_blank\">women entrepreneurs<\/a>, specifically, SCORE offers mentorship programs and a library of online resources covering various business topics. You can log on to helpful webinars, read blog articles, and consult success stories of other women for a jolt of motivation.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What\u2019s nice about SCORE is its local focus. You can enter your ZIP code and find mentors or resources right in your own backyard.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Funding for women entrepreneurs&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If funding is the primary need for your business, here are organizations that specialize in providing financial resources:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>MergeLane Accelerator: <\/strong>Companies must have at least one woman in a leadership role to qualify for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mergelane.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">this accelerator program<\/a>. The company\u2019s main office is in Boulder, Colorado, and the accelerator program ends with a showcase of participating businesses.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Women Startup Lab (WSLab): <\/strong>Another accelerator program, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenstartuplab.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Women Startup Lab,<\/a> takes a unique approach. The organization focuses on assisting all-women or mixed-gender startup teams via leadership development and coaching workshops.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Female Founders Fund: <\/strong>Focusing on the digital realm, <a href=\"https:\/\/femalefoundersfund.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Female Founders Fund<\/a> assists women-led businesses in e-commerce and digital products or services. Its investment portfolio highlights innovative, women-led companies with creative community-serving ideas.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Biz2Credit: <\/strong>Use <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biz2credit.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Biz2Credit<\/a> for flexible loans to cover working capital, term loans, commercial, and real estate.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Lendio: <\/strong>Offering women business owners lines of credit, SBA loans, term loans, and more\u2014up to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lendio.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">$5 million in funding<\/a>.<strong> <\/strong>&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>CAN Capital: <\/strong>Businesses can receive <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cancapital.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">equipment and working capital loans up to $250,000<\/a> through this commercial lender.<strong> <\/strong>&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>SoGal Foundation: <\/strong>With a mission to close the diversity gap in entrepreneurship, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iamsogal.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">SoGal Foundation<\/a> offers grants for women entrepreneurs who are nonbinary or Black ranging from $5,000 to $10,000.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Educational resources for women entrepreneurs&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Women entrepreneurs focusing more on educational resources and training should check out these resources:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Bank of America Women\u2019s Institute for Entrepreneurship at Cornell<\/strong>: This institution takes women entrepreneurs through <a href=\"https:\/\/bofainstitute.cornell.edu\/curriculum.php\" target=\"_blank\">a step-by-step timeline of launching their business<\/a>. You\u2019ll go over key concepts like marketing, writing a business plan, creating a business model, and assessing your business readiness, all within 6 2-week online courses.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Goldman Sachs 10,000 Women Online: <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.goldmansachs.com\/community-impact\/10000-women\/online-courses\" target=\"_blank\">Goldman Sachs<\/a> offers 10 free classes for women entrepreneurs. These classes cover business ownership from A to Z. You can take any or all of the courses. If you finish all 10, you\u2019ll gain access to the Goldman Sachs 10,000 Women Online alumni community\u2014a network of like-minded women who can provide more education, training, and mentorship.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Ascent: <\/strong>This is a <a href=\"https:\/\/learning.sba.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\">free online learning<strong> <\/strong>platform the SBA offers<\/a> to business owners.
