That\u2019s according to<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mckinsey.com\/featured-insights\/diversity-and-inclusion\/women-in-the-workplace\" target=\"_blank\"> Women in the Workplace 2021<\/a>\u202f\u2014 the largest study of women in corporate America by management consulting firm McKinsey.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Industry experts have seen a rapid advancement of women in tech over the last decade. This has enabled significant strides in equal representation; however, there\u2019s still lots of room for improvement:&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Women are 24% more likely to lose their jobs compared to men&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Mothers with careers are<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/worklife\/article\/20210928-why-women-are-more-burned-out-than-men\" target=\"_blank\"> 23% more likely<\/a> to experience burnout than fathers&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Globally, Women are still<a href=\"https:\/\/www.catalyst.org\/research\/women-in-the-workforce-global\/\" target=\"_blank\"> taking on the majority<\/a> of unpaid caregiving and housekeeping tasks&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s no longer about women leaning in. It\u2019s about how companies lean in to support female leaders and empower women in technology.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With this in mind, we talked with a few female technologists at\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/www.intuit.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Intuit<\/a> to hear about their unique experiences in the workplace. Their stories serve as lessons learned\u2014how might organizations empower women to thrive, even when they face structural challenges, burnout, fatigue, and more? What emerged are four ways to empower women to excel in technology roles.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Create A Culture of Diversity<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>A culture of diversity can make a big difference in employees\u2019 workplace experience. And she feels like she can bring all parts of herself to work.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis kind of culture allows women like me to feel supported and be more focused at work,\u201d she says.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hima Kurian, another Intuit engineer, also credits Intuit\u2019s culture with her career transformation. She went from a reluctant engineer to a new mother with the career of her dreams \u2014 leading, designing, and building innovative products.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hima\u2019s journey proves that creating equal opportunities for men and women can strengthen teams and organizations.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI have seen women in leadership positions bring many perspectives to decision-making,\u201d she says.\u202f&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Put Women in Leadership Roles<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Today\u2019s companies know that women in positions of power can lead to more innovation and better outcomes. Tulsi shared her story about leading a team through a location transition from Mountain View to India last August.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis kind of work is monumental,\u201d she says, \u201cbecause the team\u2019s work is leveraged by multiple global teams of\u202f\u202fQuickBooks\u202fto surface personalized real-time insights for millions of our customers.\u201d&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tulsi adds that having ownership of the project gives her the freedom to make bold decisions and build momentum. It\u2019s also paving the way for rich learning opportunities.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While leading the effort to address configuration pain points, Tulsi guided the team to conduct <a href=\"https:\/\/www.intuit.com\/blog\/intuitlife\/design-for-delight-building-deep-customer-empathy-to-solve-any-problem\/\" >\u202ffollow-me-homes<\/a>\u202fwith other teams.\u202fThe team observed a pain point in this learning process that made automation necessary to eliminate cumbersome manual processes.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Next, she set up daily <a href=\"https:\/\/www.intuit.com\/blog\/intuitlife\/design-for-delight-narrowing-on-bold-solutions-to-delight-customers\/\" >\u202fbrainstorming sessions<\/a>, which have led the team to re-architect their system in a way that has significantly reduced launch and execution time. This platform\u2019s operational excellence improvement would not be possible without Tulsi\u2019s ownership.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hima also reports similar benefits from having ownership of a project. Along with a female colleague, she was given the lead to explore and build a high-profile project. Their innovation and hard work on this project became the highlight of an internal event \u2013 which the team is incredibly proud of because it exemplifies operational excellence.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Implement Mentorship Programs<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>An inclusive workplace means normalizing career growth discussions. But that path isn\u2019t always clear and straightforward. Often, it may include feelings of confusion, challenging questions, and tough conversations. Specifically, she was looking to explore program management.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI was quite confused about which route to take in my career,\u201d she recalls.\u202fHima goes on to say that an Intuit mentor was instrumental in helping her get clear direction to move forward on her career path. Her mentor\u2019s experience of transitioning from a developer to a program manager was \u201ceye-opening,\u201d according to Hima.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mentorship not only makes women more aware of their opportunities but also helps them build confidence in the workplace. In fact, Hima\u2019s experience was so rewarding that she, like many other mentees, went on to become a mentor herself.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI love extending support to new members in the team and encouraging them to be bold and strong and to build a brand for themselves,\u201d Hima says.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Get Leadership Onboard<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>With the proper support, we can empower women to thrive in their technical roles. For Tulsi, the last five years have been a whirlwind of transformation, helping to overcome what she describes as an inherently shy personality.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cPeers and leaders are always giving me the opportunity to speak up. The fact that they are open-minded and always willing to receive feedback has helped me build a sense of confidence that my opinion matters,\u201d she says.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At Intuit, we aim to<a href=\"https:\/\/www.intuit.com\/oidam\/intuit\/ic\/en_us\/content\/intuit-dei-report-2021-icom.pdf\" target=\"_blank\"> increase representation<\/a> of women in technical roles.
