Having the drive to start a business is wonderful, but it\u2019s only part of the process. In addition to brand creation and business planning, you\u2019ll need to look at your personal finances. Starting a small business requires money, and money often requires loans. Your financial history can impact your ability to get the capital to launch your business.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Start by understanding your <\/span>credit score<\/span><\/a>. While good credit scores make it easier to obtain financing and may qualify you for better terms, it all starts with getting familiar with your score. If necessary, you can explore ways to <\/span>raise your score<\/span> to help set yourself and your business up for success.<\/span><\/p>\n

Another tip when starting a small business is to open <\/span>a\u202f<\/span>business bank account<\/span><\/a>\u202fthat is separate from your personal<\/span> account. This helps you maintain accurate records, understand your business\u2019s financial health, and make informed decisions. <\/span>When it comes to opening a business account, you have options. Do your\u202f<\/span>research\u202f<\/span><\/a>and choose the account that makes the most sense for your business. <\/span><\/p>\n

2. Know your options to access additional capital<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Businesses may <\/span>seek additional funding<\/span><\/a> at different points in their business journey for various reasons, such as assisting with start-up costs, purchasing new equipment, acquiring inventory, covering cash flow deficits, or even building a credit history.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

If you apply for a business loan, the lender will request information they can use to assess your creditworthiness. Banks and credit unions are the traditional sources for small business loans, but aren\u2019t the only lenders. Other options, like <\/span>QuickBooks Capital<\/span><\/a> can make it easier for small businesses to access capital to support and grow their business.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Some entrepreneurs use their personal funds to <\/span>support their business operations<\/span><\/a>. Remember to use your business bank account if you choose to contribute personal funds to your business. <\/span>Make your funding selection based on your business\u2019s specific needs \u2014 you can have more than one way to get capital.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In addition to repaying the amount borrowed, you may also pay interest and fees and may need to provide collateral. Be sure to factor any regular payments into your budget, so you know what to expect when managing your finances. <\/span><\/p>\n

3. Develop a marketing plan<\/strong><\/h2>\n

A business is nothing without a customer base, and attracting customers requires marketing. You\u2019ll need to understand your competition and build a plan to sell your products or services.<\/span><\/p>\n

Determine what your market looks like and identify key statistics and facts that support your claim that the market is ready for your offering. Self-employed individuals generally must pay<\/span>\u202f<\/span>self-employment tax<\/span><\/a>\u202fas well as income tax. As a self-employed individual, generally<\/span>, you\u2019re <\/span>required to file an annual return and pay estimated\u202f<\/span>tax quarterly<\/span><\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

If you have previously worked as an employee for another business, you may be used to your employer withholding the employee portion of your Federal income taxes, <\/span>specifically the Medicare and Social Security taxes, from your pay.
