{"id":7214,"date":"2022-06-29T14:00:40","date_gmt":"2022-06-29T21:00:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/intuitblog.com\/?p=7214"},"modified":"2022-08-25T08:23:02","modified_gmt":"2022-08-25T15:23:02","slug":"creating-a-company-culture-where-no-one-needs-to-hide","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.intuit.com\/blog\/life-at-intuit\/people-culture\/creating-a-company-culture-where-no-one-needs-to-hide\/","title":{"rendered":"Creating a company culture where no one needs to hide"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you knew a small shift in your behavior could help another person, would you be willing to try?<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For example, what if there were a few small adjustments that would make it easier for a colleague or friend to come out as gay or transgender?<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Good news\u2014there are!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the simplest steps you can take is to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.intuit.com\/blog\/social-responsibility\/he-she-they-why-pronouns-in-the-workplace-matter\/\" ><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">include your pronouns<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in your email signature, on your internal messenger service, and in your video meeting name tag. You can do this even if you are cisgender (that is, you identify with the gender you were assigned at birth).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You might also look at the words you use in everyday situations. For example, how many of us have used the word \u201cguys\u201d when addressing mixed-gender groups, in meetings or email introductions? Try using gender-neutral words instead\u2014such as \u201cfolks,\u201d \u201cteam,\u201d or \u201cy&#8217;all.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It may seem insignificant, but these small changes can help people who are trans or non-binary feel safe around you.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Earlier this year, on International Transgender Day of Visibility, we kicked off our third annual Trans Summit with a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/video\/event\/urn:li:ugcPost:6915311758823804928\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">LinkedIn Live broadcast<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Led by Niall O&#8217;Rourke, VP of Talent Acquisition, and TransAdvisory Board Member Jessica Darke, their conversation inspired the following takeaways on how to create a company culture rooted in allyship.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/video\/event\/urn:li:ugcPost:6915311758823804928\/\" target=\"_blank\">Watch the full conversation here.<\/a><\/p>\n<h3><b>Steps in the workplace<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Aside from small, personal actions, there are steps you can take within your workplace or other organization toward becoming a better ally to the trans+ and non-binary community.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Regardless of your role in the company, when you advocate for gender-neutral bathrooms and inclusive hiring practices, you create a safer place for people who are trans or non-binary.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Take the time and the initiative to educate yourself about the trans+ and non-binary community rather than asking a member of the community to do it for you.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From the establishment of a Transgender Advisor Group, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.intuit.com\/blog\/social-responsibility\/more-than-a-parade-spotlight-on-our-intuit-pride-network\/\" ><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pride employee resource group<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or even an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.intuit.com\/blog\/social-responsibility\/leading-the-way-to-a-more-inclusive-workplace-with-intuits-lgbtq-ally-program\/\" ><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ally program<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can help give LGBTQ+ voices a seat at the table. Programs like these can also help build tangible ways for others in your organization to learn and grow so that they can take part in meaningful actions to support the community.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We\u2019re proud of the job we\u2019ve done developing allyship and getting support from top leaders. We were the first tech company to host a Transgender Summit, now in its <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.intuit.com\/blog\/social-responsibility\/10-ways-to-show-your-support-for-transgender-and-non-binary-people\/\" ><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">third year<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It was an honor to have our CEO <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.intuit.com\/company\/executives\/sasan-goodarzi\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sasan Goodarzi <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">open the inaugural event, further supporting our company\u2019s focus on diversity, equity and inclusion, especially for the LGBTQ+ community.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Allyship as culture<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An ideal outcome is to create a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.intuit.com\/company\/corporate-responsibility\/diversity\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cultural shift in an organization<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that allows everyone to feel safe, accepted, and able to bring their whole self to work. This is especially important today, when gay and transgender rights are under assault in several states.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What\u2019s truly heartening to see is how taking bold action\u2014such as creating the Trans+ Summit\u2014has allowed allyship to become a core part of the Intuit culture. In the three years since the summit launched, attendance has snowballed. In 2020, the first summit drew a couple of hundred people. Last year, it brought in about 500. And the Trans+ Summit on March 31 had nearly 800 registrants, mostly from within Intuit. The event keeps gathering momentum with more people wanting to be part of it.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Allyship as talent magnet<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Beyond helping others feel safe and supported, a company culture that embraces allyship and prioritizes diversity, equity and inclusion can be a factor in attracting talent.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Promoting events like the Trans+ Summit, sends a clear message to people that we\u2019re an organization where allyship is alive and well\u2014a place where they can indeed bring their whole selves to work. It\u2019s a differentiator.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The same is true for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.intuit.com\/blog\/social-responsibility\/conversations-inspiring-action-introduction-of-our-new-transgender-benefits\/\" ><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">employee benefits<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that support employees and their family members who are trans or non-binary. Intuit has grown the number of benefit options that do this. Our plans can include both mental and physical health benefits like behavioral health services, including counseling for gender dysphoria and related psychiatric conditions like anxiety and depression. We also cover gender reassignment and related surgery, including all procedures recommended by the World Professional Association for Transgender Health (WPATH).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We\u2019ve also created a trans support channel within Intuit\u2019s internal communications\u2014and you don\u2019t even need to be trans to be a part of it. It\u2019s a safe space that benefits both employees and family members of trans or non-binary people. We made this space for people who may have a trans family member\u2014a child, sibling, or parent, for example\u2014and need support from others who understand the challenges they may be facing.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><b>Strive to do your best<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Remember to be patient with yourself. For many, it will take time to develop the habits of better allyship. There may be times when you\u2019ll forget the name of a colleague who\u2019s in transition, or bungle someone\u2019s pronouns.
