Don&#8217;t stress about your career path<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The more professionals you talk to, the more you\u2019ll see that career paths are full of changes, pivots, breaks, and surprises. What a fulfilling career means to you may change throughout different stages of your life. The good news is, no matter where you\u2019ve been, there\u2019s a way to get to where you want to go.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you want to know what it\u2019s like to work in a specific field\u2014marketing, tech, or\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/www.intuit.com\/blog\/social-responsibility\/a-need-for-equity\/\" >Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion<\/a>\u202f(DEI) \u2014seek an informational interview with someone who already does that job. You can also ask to shadow someone at work so you can see what their day is like. That person may even be willing to mentor you.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Focus on your unique skills<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Celeste Easter, a talent acquisition leader at Intuit, says she \u201cfell into\u201d recruiting partly because of her love of people.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s no clear roadmap,\u201d she says. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.intuit.com\/blog\/life-at-intuit\/11-career-change-tips-how-to-successfully-transition-careers\/\" >Pivoting from one position to another<\/a> throughout your career is very common, especially if your company is passionate about providing internal growth and learning opportunities.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By taking time to\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/www.intuit.com\/blog\/intuitlife\/from-hopeful-dreamer-to-an-inspiring-career-in-tech\/\" >identify the talents and soft skills<\/a>\u202fthat make you unique, you can explore new careers that play to your strengths.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At different points in her life, Nicolette Grannum wanted to be a veterinarian, teacher, and archeologist. So how did she become a mechanical engineer and later a software engineer at Intuit?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Be firm on your goal, but flexible on your path<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Nicolette joined the\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/anitab.org\/apprenticeship\/\" target=\"_blank\">Apprenticeship Pathways Program<\/a>, a paid seven-month software development apprenticeship for underrepresented groups in tech. By keeping her options open and identifying what learning styles were most effective for her, Nicolette\u2019s switch from aspiring educator to engineer is an excellent example of how one can\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/www.intuit.com\/blog\/social-responsibility\/6-tips-to-help-women-in-tech\/\" >pivot successfully in your studies and career<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>2. Find a company you fit with<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Finding a job that\u2019s a good fit is essential, but finding a company that\u2019s a good fit may be even smarter career advice for young adults. Review a company\u2019s principles and mission and compare them against your ethics to see if your values align.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In choosing a job, Mos\u2019 Okediji, head of global marketing development at Intuit, recommends focusing on what kind of projects you\u2019ll get to do. It\u2019s important to know what the company stands for\u2014because its ethos will guide what you\u2019ll be working on daily. The longer you work, the more you\u2019ll see that whom you work for makes a huge difference.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can discover these important factors by asking in-depth questions during your interview and researching potential employers. Don\u2019t rely on descriptions on someone\u2019s website. Ask the interviewer for:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Examples of their values in action&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The company\u2019s retention rates&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>How they\u2019ll measure success for this role<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>As an employee, you bring something unique to an organization that your current or prospective employer should appreciate.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>3. Develop your leadership skills<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Leadership skills can come from many different places. You can develop them by becoming an expert in a specific field, following your interests across diverse career roles, and even in your activities outside the workplace.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Intuit\u2019s Kyle Johnson, senior support product analyst at<a href=\"https:\/\/mailchimp.com\/\" target=\"_blank\"> Mailchimp<\/a>, says you can develop leadership skills by being active in your community, sports, church, and family\u2014even speaking up against discrimination.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIf you can put on paper examples where you showed empathy, compassion, listening; where you amplified someone, where you spoke up, where you rallied folks and kept them engaged; those are all leadership skills that can translate really well onto your resume,\u201d says Kyle.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Britney Peart, DEI coordinator at Intuit, became a leader in DEI by immersing herself in the subject at an early age. In addition to minoring in African American and diaspora studies, her experience is full of free enrichment programs focusing on leadership, public speaking, and other skills.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cTake advantage of being a part of courses that discuss race, and equities, and social movements,\u201d she advises.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>4. Understand it\u2019s OK to make mistakes<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The International Girls Academy panelists spoke openly about their mistakes during our visit. Their messaging reaffirms mistakes as just another part of life and precious learning experiences. Your response is more important than the mistake itself.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Peart\u2019s career advice for adults is to embrace the struggle and reach out for help. \u201cIt\u2019s OK to make mistakes. You\u2019re not going to die over it, especially when you\u2019re 15, 16, 18 years old. That\u2019s the time in which you\u2019re supposed to make mistakes.\u201d&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The value of mistakes comes from learning from them and doing better the next time. That can be reaching out to a manager for support earlier in the process or improving your time management skills.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Never feel like you have to suffer in silence. Mistakes happen. But when you\u2019re willing to examine the process and take feedback, you\u2019ll learn a valuable lesson \u2013 above all else, don\u2019t be afraid to fail, and don\u2019t give up.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>5. Make job readiness a priority in your life<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Intuit\u2019s education programming provides career advice for young adults.
