  • How much does it cost to use the TurboTax or Mint simulations?

It is free to use these simulations. Use the Teacher Checklist, which outlines the easy steps for what to do if you are prompted to enter a credit card during the TurboTax simulation.

  • Do these lessons have connections to the Jump$tart National Standards or CEE National Standards?

Yes, each lesson connects to both Jump$tart and CEE’s Personal Finance National Standards.

TurboTax

  • How do I get started?

Access our Teacher Checklist here for the steps to get started. As an educator, be sure to complete the simulation yourself before integrating into your classroom.

  • Can we use TurboTax.com for the simulation?

No, you cannot access the simulation from TurboTax.com. Access our TurboTax simulation specifically built for education at this link.

  • My students are having trouble getting back into their accounts. How can they login?

If your students get logged out in the middle of a session, they will need to create a new login. Due to Student Data Privacy being a high concern, they will need to create a new account. All TurboTax simulations should be complete in one session (~30 minutes to complete).

  • How do my students hand in their fictitious returns?

Step 3 of the Teacher Checklist highlights how to download or print your return depending if your students will be submitting via computer or paper.

  • Can I make my own W2 for my students?

  • My students are having trouble logging back into their accounts. What do I do?

Be sure your students are using the same computers each time. If they cannot get into the simulation, have them create a new account prior to starting the lesson plan.

  • What simulation should my students start with?

Your students should start with the intro activity to get them familiarized with Mint. After that you can go in any order you choose and do not need to complete one before another.

  • How can I make sure my students are doing the work?

Unfortunately, we do not currently have a “teacher” view. Students will need to complete the student simulation PDFs and share with you directly.

Career Readiness questions

Design for Delight

  • How is Design for Delight (D4D) related to design thinking from organizations like IDEO or Stanford?

Design for Delight shares many ideas and tools with the design thinking methods developed at IDEO and Stanford University. Most importantly, Design for Delight is focused on understanding and meeting customer needs, which is another way of saying that we practice human-centered design. Many classic techniques associated with design thinking, such as brainstorming, prototyping, and experimenting, are also key features of Design for Delight.

  • Can I use Design for Delight in my class on (history, science, English)?

Absolutely! Design for Delight can be used in any subject or class in which students need to build skills in creativity, communication, and collaboration. All you need is a human-centered challenge that students can work on in pairs or teams to come up with an innovative solution.

  • Can I use Design for Delight in my elementary school classroom?

Yes! Although our content and materials are targeted for older students, you can use many of the ideas and tools in your elementary school classroom. Keep in mind that using Design for Delight doesn’t mean you use every single tool or technique. Many teachers have successfully used basic techniques such as customer interviews, brainstorming, rapid prototyping, and testing with younger students.

  • I work in education but I’m not a teacher (e.g., I’m an administrator, counselor, coach, etc.). How can I use Design for Delight?

Many education professionals have used Design for Delight to approach problems in education such as curriculum design, school schedules, policy changes, and other important topics. We recommend that you use our materials to build innovation skills within your team, and then work together to apply the principles to a current challenge in your work.

  • How is Design for Delight different from conventional problem-solving methods?

While many conventional problem-solving methods start with analysis, often done alone, Design for Delight encourages us to start with customer interactions that enable us to understand the problem firsthand. Furthermore, Design for Delight encourages us to come up with many solutions, rather than just one, based on the belief that generating many ideas makes a creative breakthrough more likely. Finally, Design for Delight is an iterative process that includes creating, testing, and improving on our ideas, instead of a linear approach that concludes after the first solution has been found.

  • Does Design for Delight work with Project-Based Learning (PBL)?

Design for Delight is a great complement to Project-Based Learning. For any given project, students can apply relevant techniques from Design for Delight such as observation, hypothesis testing, and iteration to come up with more innovative and collaborative final outcomes. Furthermore, the Design for Delight framework is ideal for students to learn in pairs or teams, while building their abilities to empathize, work together effectively, and present their ideas.
