Why AI Won’t Replace Great Salespeople

Intuit is moving upstream into the mid-market: an $89 billion opportunity, coming off a year of 40% revenue growth. That kind of growth needs sellers who can sell a platform, not a point solution, and who know the deals that matter are still won by people, not algorithms.

Gina Cafiero, a Workforce & HCM Senior Account Executive on Intuit’s mid-market sales team, put that idea into words in a LinkedIn post that struck a chord with sellers across the industry. We’re sharing it here, in her own words. It says something about what it actually takes to succeed in sales at Intuit right now: AI fluency, yes, but never at the expense of the instincts that make someone great at this job in the first place.

One AE’s Take: Why Listening Still Wins

“A lot of people in sales are scared AI is going to take their job. I am too, it keeps me up at night. But something happened that changed how I see the value I bring.

I get AI insights on our team’s calls and will ask it for a synopsis, key takeaways and recommendations. It works. I can easily show up prepared with context that I otherwise wouldn’t have.

Recently, on the recommendation of one of our team’s top performers, I started listening to the calls instead. That changed everything!

AI had given me all the words. But when I heard the person’s voice, their cadence, the slight edge in the tone of their voice, or perhaps optimism and the willingness to take another call, I could uncover things about that person that no AI summary could have ever told me.

In physics, resonance is what happens when one vibrating object causes another to vibrate at the same frequency, amplifying both. That’s what happens in a great sales conversations.

When you’re truly present, really listening, not just waiting to respond, something biological happens. Nervous systems sync. Breathing aligns. Trust builds before a single word about product is spoken. Einstein called intuition a sacred gift. Tesla said the secrets of the universe live in energy, frequency, and vibration. In sales, we call it reading the room.

AI can process what people say. It cannot resonate with who they are. It has no nervous system to sync, no frequency to share. It can summarize a call. It cannot feel it shift. Voice inflection isn’t data, it’s signal. It tells you where confidence ends and anxiety begins. It tells you whether “we’re happy with what we have” means satisfaction or armor.

I don’t think AI is going to replace salespeople. I think it’s going to replace the ones who stop listening.”

Why Human Intelligence Wins in Intuit’s Mid-Market Sales Team

Our belief that AI plus HI — Human Intelligence — is the winning combination shapes our products and how we sell them. Our customers make high-stakes financial decisions where accuracy, compliance, security, and privacy matter. People bring the judgment, empathy, and accountability that AI can’t.

A few reasons that matters right now:

You’re selling a platform, not a point solution.

Intuit Enterprise Suite brings together accounting, payroll, payments, and marketing (QuickBooks, Mailchimp, and QuickBooks Workforce) into one system. This means conversations are more consultative and relationship-driven, not transactional.

The market is moving fast.

Mid-market revenue grew 40% and customers grew 26% in the most recent fiscal year, so AEs are working live, high-opportunity territory rather than a mature, saturated one.

AI is a tool for sellers, not a replacement for them.

Every AE has access to AI-powered call insights and deal support but the differentiator is still what a seller does with the judgment AI can’t replicate.

Deals move.

Mid-market and inside sales cycles run in weeks, not the multi-quarter slogs typical of enterprise sales, so the “listening” Gina describes translates quickly into closed business.
