Intuit is bringing the Accounting Futures Program, a part of its Career Pipeline Initiative, a free workforce development initiative, to college campuses nationwide starting this upcoming school year. The expanded program now offers a new curriculum focused on strategic judgement and AI for accounting, a direct path for students to earn industry-recognized certifications, and in-classroom guidance from top accounting advisors who bring real-world insights directly into education.
As AI continues to reshape every profession, including accounting, accounting firms are redefining what they look for in early career talent. That means strategic thinking and strong judgment are even more important from day one. In fact, according to Intuit’s 2026 Accountant Technology Survey, respondents ranked strategic judgment as their top hiring priority (38%), with AI fluency taking second place (22%). That’s why the Accounting Futures Program curriculum is centered around lessons in communicating to build client trust, analyzing and interpreting financial reports, and AI applications in accounting.
The urgency of the program is also underscored by broader accounting industry dynamics. With 75% of the current accounting workforce expected to retire within the next decade, according to the American Institute of CPAs, the profession faces a mounting talent shortage at the very moment that client expectations and technological capabilities are accelerating. According to Intuit’s 2026 Accountant Technology Survey, 77% of accounting firms report at least one hiring struggle in the last 12 months, and 56% say a new entry-level hire would take six or more months to become fully productive.
The Career Pipeline Initiative is designed to meet this moment of industry transition and AI transformation. As part of Intuit’s commitment to upskill one million accounting students and future entrepreneurs over the next five years, we’re bridging the gap between classroom theory and real-world application by combining our AI-driven platform with human expertise. The Accounting Futures Program ensures graduates aren’t just software users; they are the critical thinkers that accounting firms are looking to hire.
Preparing Students for Accounting Careers Today
As artificial intelligence reshapes the workforce, education must evolve with it. The Career Pipeline Initiative is designed to keep academic preparation aligned with current professional expectations.
The program serves as a guided pathway that builds confidence, credentials, and real-world readiness for today’s students by offering:
- Curriculum: Lessons are modern, free, engaging, and ready for learning inside or outside the classroom. Educators can teach the skills firms are hiring for in a way that fits their teaching style, without building materials from scratch.
- Industry-Recognized Credentials: The program enables students to graduate with industry certifications firms require.
- Access to Industry Advisors: Practicing accounting professionals from QuickBooks-recognized firms step into classrooms to teach and inspire students about the career they could have, by the professionals who’d hire them.
The program has already demonstrated a measurable impact in boosting student’s career readiness and hiring success rate. During its pilot at Utah Valley University, half the class landed a firm internship or their own client before graduation.
“I originally planned to get my associate’s degree, but after being introduced to the Accounting Futures Program, I decided to pursue my bachelor’s, and I was offered a job at a firm before graduation,” said Charlese Hoopes, a 2026 graduate of Utah Valley University who participated in the pilot of the Accounting Futures Program. “In my interview, I was able to clearly explain how I already had the personal and technical skills they were looking for, which also helped me overcome the impostor syndrome that comes with starting a career after school. The program also introduced me to Client Advisory Services (CAS) accounting, which is a totally different side of the profession. Entrepreneurs can’t run and scale their businesses without a strong backend team. Now, with my degree and skillset, I feel like I get to be the support they need so they can pursue their dreams, and that’s really special.”
“When people and businesses need help managing their finances, they’re looking for a trusted expert who gives them confidence in their decisions,” said Simon Williams, VP of Accountant Segment at Intuit. “The Career Pipeline Initiative is our commitment to making sure the next generation of accountants have the skills to deliver that trust and confidence from day one to help more people and businesses thrive.”
“Intuit for Education’s mission is to empower students with financial confidence and career readiness for future personal and professional success,” said Dave Zasada, Vice President, Intuit for Education. “We built the Accounting Futures Program curriculum with that same mission, specifically for today’s accounting students. This program does more than just strengthen their hiring potential, it prepares them to move seamlessly from the classroom to their career, backed by real-world insight, industry-recognized credentials, and the judgment firms are looking for.”
The Career Pipeline Initiative builds on Intuit’s long-standing commitment to making financial education more accessible at every stage of the learning journey. Intuit provides training courses and industry-recognized certifications in bookkeeping and tax preparation for free as well as 340+ hours of free financial literacy curriculum for middle school through high school students, teachers, and parents.
